BREAKING NEWS: Plastic Straws & Drink Stirrers To Be Banned in England
The UK government has confirmed the ban on the sale of plastic straws, drink stirrers and cotton buds from April 2020. In an article from Surfers Against Sewage it was explained that the ban will include exemptions to ensure those with medical needs or a disability can still access plastic straws.
The ban is a welcome step forward, plastic straws have long been recognised as unnecessary plastic pollution. It has been estimated around 8.3 billion plastic straws pollute the world's beaches, with around 4.4 billion straws estimated to be thrown away in the UK alone every year.
